HRV CADENCE · 5.5-0-5.5-0

10-Minute Coherent Breathing Deep Session

An immersive 10-minute coherent breathing session (55 resonant cycles). Allows the cardiovascular baroreflex to achieve full entrainment, producing deep autonomic recalibration and elevated nocturnal HRV.

How to Practice

Inhale smoothly for 5.5 seconds and exhale smoothly for 5.5 seconds with zero pauses. Maintain this circular wave for 55 complete cycles to achieve full physiological entrainment.

The Biology of the Cadence

After 3 to 5 minutes of resonant 5.5-second breathing, physiological entrainment occurs: the heart rate rhythm, blood pressure Mayer waves, and respiratory cycles synchronize into a unified oscillation. Extending the session to 10 minutes deepens baroreflex sensitivity reset, producing durable reductions in sympathetic tone and measurable elevations in overnight recovery metrics.

  • •Allows enough time for complete cardiovascular baroreflex entrainment to establish and solidify.
  • •Drives the deepest autonomic nervous system reset available through volitional breathing.
  • •Prepares the mind for deep contemplative meditation or creative problem-solving.

When to Use This Cadence

  • •Morning meditation foundation or autonomic conditioning routine.
  • •Deep somatic recovery on rest days or following high-strain training.
  • •Evening decompression to deeply unplug from intense cognitive work.

Posture

Sit on a meditation cushion or supportive chair. Keep your spine erect and relaxed, letting your belly soften completely.

Nasal Path

Exclusively nasal, smooth, and circular breathing throughout all 10 minutes.

Reference Notes

Biofeedback & Self-Regulation (2000) — Paul Lehrer and Evgeny Vaschillo demonstrated that 10 minutes of resonant frequency breathing maximizes the amplitude of heart rate oscillations and baroreflex gain.
Personal Companion

A note on practicing with your eyes closed

Looking at a computer or phone screen while doing breathwork is inherently counterproductive. I built this web pacer for quick pauses during deep work, but for bedtime or deep de-escalation, glowing pixels keep your optic nerves active.

If you want a tactile, screen-free experience, I also designed a native iPhone and Apple Watch app called Breathwork. It guides your cadence using gentle, silent Taptic Engine pulses on your wrist or palm—allowing you to close your eyes completely in bed, with audio that continues while locked and automatic Apple Health logging.

Questions & Notes

What is physiological entrainment?

Entrainment occurs when distinct biological rhythms—heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure waves—lock into phase and oscillate at the exact same resonant frequency (0.1 Hz).

Can I do this lying down?

Yes, but sitting upright allows your diaphragm full vertical excursion and prevents accidental drowsiness during the 10-minute session.
